Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is designed to focus on the way people think and act to help them with their emotional and behavioural problems and works on the principle that you can live more happily and productively if you are thinking and behaving in healthy ways. It is an excellent talking therapy where clients can understand how their emotions affect their thoughts, which in turn affects their behaviours.
CBT treats a wide variety of problems including anxiety, panic disorders and phobias.
At Mind Calm what we like about CBT is that whilst it is helpful to discuss the past and understand how our pasts have influenced our lives and how the problems have come about, it mostly focuses on looking for ways to improve your mental wellbeing now and making positive steps for the future. It helps our clients become more self-aware and understand why they are feeling as they are and develop helpful strategies themselves, with the therapist support, to make positive change.
For example, if someone you know passes you in the street without acknowledging you, you can interpret it several ways. You might think they don’t want to know you because no-one likes you (which may lead you to feel depressed), your thought may be that you hope they don’t stop to talk to you, because you won’t know what to say and you’ll make a fool of yourself (anxiety), you may think she’s being deliberately snotty (leading to anger). A healthier response might be that she just didn’t see you. CBT can explore these thoughts and feelings and bring about a different outcome.
